Carving the sand
The preparations for Sand World 2005 are in full swing.
At the „beach salon“ on the peak of the Wallhalbinsel peninsula in Travemünde a first sculpture was built from 26 t of sand to test the sculpture sand from the sand pit at Niederlehme in Brandenburg.
The organizers plan to use sand from this area to replace the sand used in the last years which was brought to Travemünde from the Dutch region Trabant (Cujk), if the sand quality allows this. If the sand does have the necessary quality, the production costs could be cut by one third because the material is cheaper and the transportation costs would be significantly lower.
The decisive factors are the grain size of 0.015 mm and 0.5 mm, the silt level (level of particular matters) and the ecological compatibility (z0). The final decision which sand is best for Sand World will be taken in the next few days.
Within four days sculptors created a test sand sculpture of approximately 3 metres height at the „beach salon“, showing a giant who leans against a fairy tale castle, which is already a foretaste of this year’s fairy tale world, which will be on display at Sand World 2005.
The organizers of Sand World will have to be patient for another two weeks until the construction works on the Priwall beach in Travemünde will finally start.
